Established in 2007, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards are proudly brought to you by the City of Brisbane, Australia’s New World City. APSA is the region’s highest accolade in film where cinematic excellence shines. With films from 70 countries and areas in the region, APSA honours filmmaking that best reflects its cultural origins and the diversity of the Asia Pacific.
APSA is an international cultural program supported by Brisbane City Council and powered by Brisbane Marketing. It is endorsed by foundation partners Paris-based UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations. The awards ceremony is an exclusive presentation unique to Brisbane.
Now in its second decade, APSA has solidified itself as a globally-recognised event that is a defining part of the international film calendar. Nearly 3000 films have featured in competition and while they cover varied genres, styles and scope, they have all been united by their diversity. Each film tells its own unique story in its own way, from its own country of origin.
APSA is also aiding the further connection of the Asia Pacific to the rest of the world through its ongoing alliance with the European Film Academy and the recently announced partnership with The Premios Platino Awards. These relationships now give Brisbane, APSA and its Academy representation across four continents and in over 100 countries. The 2018 APSA ceremony brings many of the region’s leading filmmakers – newcomers and masters alike – together.
This year’s far-reaching selection of nominees encompasses 46 films that represent the stories of 22 countries and areas of the Asia Pacific. APSA’s reach goes beyond just simply giving out awards. APSA brings people together from all over the world, fostering international relationships and cultural awareness that has led to powerful ties and prosperous friendships between artists that could not have been achieved outside of APSA.
Extending now into its 12th year, APSA continues to unearth the rich stories of the region and open doors and unique opportunities for those in the film industry. APSA has drawn the entire world’s attention to the Asia Pacific’s inherent cinematic diversity and is recognised internationally for the way it unites and inspires.
The global film industry has become more connected and spread more widely through co-productions, streaming and new funding methods like crowd-funding. APSA’s international reach continues to grow and is now an essential part of the international film community.

IGNITING AND HONOURING CINEMATIC EXCELLENCE
The Asia Pacific Screen Awards has created the Asia Pacific Screen Forum, a programme of industry events that develop and nurture Asia Pacific filmmakers. It is an influential network where strategic and creative decisions are made, projects are championed, deals are done and collaborations are born.
Local filmmakers and industry are encouraged to meet and connect with this year’s nominees and APSA International Jury and panel members at the Asia Pacific Screen Forum.
Events include a wide selection of focussed discussions on the filmmaking process, social networking opportunities to expand your connections and a number of special events.

Free film events kick off Asia Pacific Screen Forum
Legendary Australian actor Jack Thompson AM PhD is set to appear In Conversation with David Wenham for the Brisbane premiere of NFSA Restores: Sunday Too Far Away (1975).
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the event headlines a series of free public events as part of the new-look Asia Pacific Screen Forum in the lead up to the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in November.
“We are thrilled to present APSA and see two Australian greats, Jack Thompson and David Wenham, share the stage for a highly entertaining conversation,” Cr Schrinner said.
“To kick off the Asia Pacific Screen Forum, there will be a weekend of animated films at the Gallery of Modern Art on November 16 and 17, including four new films that have been nominated for Best Animated Feature at APSA.”
Cr Schrinner said the nominated animated films include everything from Mosley, a New Zealand-made adventure featuring the voice of Lucy Lawless, to the film Japan has put forward for the 2020 Oscars®, Weathering with You.
Each film will be opened with an animated short film from the SIGGRAPH Asia Computer Animation Festival, the world’s biggest computer animation festival, which is coming to Brisbane for the first time in November.
“Audiences will also have the chance to hear from APSA Award-winning Kazakh filmmaker Adilkhan Yerzhanov in a special Directors Chair conversation, along with other filmmakers throughout the forum,” he said.
“The international VFX studio behind the Star Wars films, Industrial Light and Magic, will also run a free workshop for aspiring filmmakers to learn from industry leaders.
“The Asia Pacific Screen Awards delivers a rich and diverse program of events to Brisbane and we are proud to host it for another year.
“We are expecting a great turn out for the Asia Pacific Screen Forum and I highly encourage Brisbane residents to come out and join in the fun.”
