Deepening the ties - opportunities for increased engagement between Queensland and the Pacific islands region
A panel discussion moderated by Tess Newton Cain, Principal of TNC Pacific Consulting
Cameron Dick, Queensland Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning
Stefan Armbruster, Pacific correspondent for SBS News
Brian Atkin, Makira Gold
Ema Vueti, Chair of the Pacific Islands Council of Queensland
Queensland's relationship with the Pacific island nations is broad and sophisticated built on more than 200 years of, at times controversial, historical bonds. Last November PM Scott Morrison declared Queensland is Australia's "gateway to the Pacific" as part of his "step up" policy in the region. There are many opportunities to deepen existing ties and establish new ones across political, social, cultural, and economic spheres. In particular, what is on the horizon for maximising economic linkages to build trade, employment and economic growth that is sustainable and mutually beneficial? This panel event provides an opportunity explore the potential from the perspectives of state government, the business sector, the diaspora community, and others.
