About the event

Entering 2020, Australia’s international education sector was already experiencing slowing demand and structural challenges in managing continued growth and diversity. The reputational impacts of bushfires and COVID, along with the restricted movement of students, have put the sector under enormous pressure. A strong and sustainable international education sector is in Australia’s national interest and the benefits spread far beyond the classroom.

Whilst the media tends to focus on this as an issue largely for public universities, there are thousands of providers spread across Australia employing more than 250,000 people and generating export revenue for local economies, that rely on students.   More than 450,000 international students have remained resident in Australia during COVID 19, bringing its own challenges and opportunities, and showing the importance of education on our soft power kitbag. Gain insights from Rebecca Hall, Head of the International Education Centre of Excellence who’s led Austrade’s response for the sector during COVID.  Her message is that we don’t just want to recover, let’s  seize this opportunity to create a path to renewal.
