Medical tourism vital for Victoria’s economic health

VICTORIA’s peak employer body has welcomed plans to improve medical tourism opportunities in Victoria through Melbourne’s new Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

“Our health sector contains excellent research, technology, human resources, products and services, so we encourage initiatives that utilise these for the benefit of the Victorian economy,” says VECCI Chief Executive Mark Stone.

VECCI has long been a supporter of the need for growing medical tourism in Victoria and Mr Stone’s comments come in the wake of reports that there will be 50 private beds in the new facility for insured and fee-paying international patients.

“Given the opportunities presented by the Asian Century, it is more important than ever that we capitalise on our strengths in the medical field,” says Mr Stone.

Growing health sector exports was a major recommendation made by VECCI at its 2013 Victoria Summit, which focused on the importance of making Victoria more competitive, smarter, international and liveable.

VECCI has also been a consistent advocate for the facilitation of medical conferences in Victoria, including the largest medical conference ever to be held in Australia – the 2014 International Aids Conference – which is expected to bring 14,000 delegates from 200 countries and generate $80 million for Victoria.

Melbourne’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is due to be built by the end of 2015.
