MSQ gets involved at Boyne-Tannum HookUp fishing competition to promote safety
MARITIME SAFETY Queensland (MSQ) is spreading the boating safety message at Australia’s largest family fishing competition, the Boyne-Tannum HookUp, over the Labour Day long weekend, from May 2-4.
MSQ will be making a splash with entertaining activities and safety demonstrations including the proper use of lifejackets to improve boating safety. New lifejacket laws have been in place since 1 December 2024.
The MSQ team will be at Bray Park, Boyne Island for the competition safety brief, a demonstration on how to use lifejackets and a joint demonstration with the Queensland Police Service on how to use maritime flares – Visitors to the MSQ gazebo will have the chance to win a free (AS4758 compliant) lifejacket.
Along with providing prizes, advice and hints for safer boating, MSQ will be showcasing its skills and marine pollution equipment as it assists with the much-loved Seafarer Duck Race, which helps raise money for the Gladstone Mission to Seafarers.
The MSQ vessel Badger and crew will be out on the water keeping a close eye on the rubber ducks and making sure none of them ‘escape’.
The Boyne-Tannum HookUp is celebrating its 30th year in 2025, with competition categories for adults and children.
Along with the fishing competition, this three-day community event will feature a number of community partners.
