New Release…
Australian Outback Legend: Harry Readford
Acumen Media is proud to release this major art/narrative book – Harry Readford's Outback
with Maleny based artist and author John Morrison. This initial art
book introduces the history of Readford (also written as Redford) – a
man whom the author argues had extraordinary influence on the
Australian ethos. But today Harry Readford is predominantly remembered
as the fictional character ‘Captain Starlight’ and as stockman who
perpetrated the most audacious and imaginative cattle theft of 1200
head of cattle from Longreach in Central Queensland and droving them
nearly 2000 kilometres via the Strzlecki Desert to South Australia in
1870.
The Harry Readford cattle drive
commemorates that feat annually, but Mr Morrison's book goes behind the
legend to explore how Readford's bush craft – in part learnt from indigenous Australians –
ability to speak certain aboriginal dialects, horsemanship,
resourcefulness and traditions of mateship laid the foundation for the
"hardy, good humoured Aussie" character that would emerge and resound
from federation and post-Gallipoli.
This limited edition high quality art book is likely to be followed by an educational touring book and maybe a novel.
