Queensland businesses and community organisations who are actively paving the way for reconciliation should nominate for the 2010 Reconciliation Awards for Business by March 12.
Now in their eighth year, the awards provide an opportunity to shine a spotlight on communities and businesses working on reconciliation projects and initiatives around the state and allow them to share their achievements with others.
Winners from 2009 included Qantas, the Drumley Walk, the partnership between Warner Village Theme Parks and Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, and Western Cape Centre Ltd in the Cape York region.
Qantas promotes reconciliation through its Reconciliation Action Plan and initiatives such as employment, supporting Indigenous enterprise and promoting shared pride in Indigenous culture;
The Drumley Walk is a pilgrimage walk which allows Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to share stories and learn about nature and local history;
The partnership between Warner Village Theme Parks and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation offers traineeships to Indigenous youth from remote communities.
Western Cape Centre Ltd fosters reconciliation through providing cultural awareness
training for people working in the Cape York region.
Awards Ambassador, Indigenous role model Nadine McDonald-Dowd, said it was terrific to see so many organisations from such diverse industries taking positive steps towards strengthening reconciliation in Queensland.
"These projects all acknowledge our past and help pave the way for a better future," Ms McDonald-Dowd said.
The awards offer a total prize money package of $25,000 across four categories: Emerging Business, Established Business, Community Organisation and Partnerships.
Award winners will be announced at a presentation ceremony during Reconciliation Week from May 27 to June 3.
The Reconciliation Awards for Business is an initiative of the Queensland Government through the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Department of Communities, Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, Department of Public Works, Department of Transport and Main Roads and is supported by ABC Local Radio, Indigenous Business Australia and National Indigenous Times.
Premier Anna Bligh said the awards program is an important part of the Queensland Government's commitment to the 2009-2012 Reconciliation Action Plan.
Nominations close Friday 12 March 2010.
