Structural Branch : An Introduction to Structural Dynamics Print
Tuesday, 09 February 2010, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

engineersaustralia_logo.gifPresented by Dr Richard Duczmal, Specialist Structural Engineer, Worley Parsons

The presentation will consider many of the mandatory requirements necessary to calculate the natural frequency of structures composed of line elements. Modern computer based analysis tools can be used to calculate the natural frequency of a structural idealisation. Unfortunately, most structural engineers only have a very limited educational background in structural dynamics and may not be aware of modelling inadequacies.

An introductory overview will be presented on the practical and conceptual aspects of structural dynamics. Also, traps and tips will be presented on how to more accurately create an acceptable model of a line element structure for which the natural frequency is required. Guidance will be presented on acceptance criteria (proximity to resonance) and procedures to move the natural frequency of the structure away from resonance.

Dr Richard Duczmal has 40 years experience within the engineering industry and is currently a Specialist Structural Engineer at Worley Parsons. He has extensive experience in the inspection, analysis and structural design of static and mobile material-handling plant. With a Masters and a Doctorate degree in nonlinear vibration prediction, Richard has wide ranging experience in structural dynamics (resonance issues) and in reducing the occurrence of fatigue induced cracking (remnant life assessment) in large mobile materials handling plant. Moreover, he has inspected, investigated, analysed and designed a wide variety of complex steel structures.
