Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision presents "Global Crisis or Ethical Crisis"

Tim Costello is recognised as one of Australia’s leading voices on social justice issues, having spearheaded public debates on gambling, urban poverty, homelessness, reconciliation and substance abuse. Tim Costello

And since February 2004, as Chief Executive of World Vision Australia, Tim has also been instrumental in ensuring that the issues surrounding global poverty are placed on the national agenda. Economic Crisis or Ethical Crisis - The past nine months of massive company collapses and economic downturn has been characterised as a Global Financial Crisis - but a deeper examination reveals a culture of self-interest and competition that could fairly be described as an ethical crisis.

"Bonus" is now a dirty word. Everyone is looking at executive pay with a horror that wasn’t apparent while their investments were on the rise. Apparently the Global Financial Crisis has enabled people to gain a much clearer moral vision.

Nonetheless, where do we go from here to refashion corporate culture? Changes in behaviour inside a company will not be shaped solely by laws and regulation, but by the people who run them.

Terms such as "stakeholders" and "corporate social responsibility" are really just a fancy way of looking at what have always been moral issues? Business leaders doing the right thing,…. that is good corporate governance.

This financial crisis will pass, but we will only build a sustainable economic future by reordering our values and fashioning a culture of ethical behaviour in companies that rewards balance and penalises reckless self-advancement.
