The Australian Institute of Management (AIM) singled out Queensland’s top managers and business leaders at the 2008 Management Excellence Awards Final last month. One of the most coveted of the awards, the Medal for Management Innovation went to Mark Pascoe, CEO of the International Water Centre (IWC). The medal, conferred by the AIM Board, seeks to honour stand-out business leaders who have demonstrated breakthrough management innovation on the Australian and world stage.

Mr Pascoe was acknowledged for his role in developing innovative water management solutions for national and international clients using a Queensland developed education framework. Professional Manager of the Year was Ian Gillespie, chief executive of RACQ, Brisbane, while Owner Manager of the Year was Darren Steinhardt, managing director of Infocus Wealth Management, Sunshine Coast. Geoffrey Pike, managing director of General Trade Industries Pty Ltd, of Toowoomba, was named Rural Remote Manager of the Year, while Young Manager of the Year was Rick Coker, engineering manager of Russell Mineral Equipment Pty Ltd, also of Toowoomba. The four winners won their respective categories after being named regional finalists at AIM events in  Brisbane, Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Townsville, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

AIM CEO Carolyn Barker said. “Congratulations to Ian, Darren, Geoffrey, Rick and Mark for their outstanding achievements. The bar has been lifted yet again with fierce competition across all the categories.

“Each winner represents the cream of the management crop and it’s a pleasure for AIM to recognise their unique capabilities and important contributions to the business community.” The Management Excellence Awards is Australia’s most prestigious awards program for individual managers and nominations for 2009 are now open.
