The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has been recognised for its fine service, with a team of its staff winning a Gold Medal and top honours in the 2011 Fonterra Sydney Culinary Challenge.
A front-of-house team comprising Kate Crocker, Shehzad Athar and Ricky Nguyen were the only Gold Medal winners for Restaurant Service, impressing the judges with their table settings and food and wine service skills.
All three are currently TAFE students studying hospitality and had trained for weeks to prepare for the competition. They were supported by a back-of-house team made up of Jason Powell, David Hebbron and Levi Murphy, who developed and prepared a contemporary menu.
Kate Crocker is also the Australian entrant in the international Worldskills Restaurant Service competitions being held in London from October 5-8, and had previously won the Worldskills regional and national titles to qualify.
Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre Director of Food and Beverage Simon Lomas said it was the second time a Centre team had won gold in the Culinary Challenge since it first entered in 2009.
"The Centre is proud to offer cuisine with the level of sophistication you'd expect in a city of fine restaurants like Sydney, but we also place a lot of importance on the standards of service our guests experience," Mr Lomas said.
"The Culinary Challenge Gold Medal provides an endorsement of that experience, as well as important recognition for the people who work hard to deliver these standards on a daily basis."
The Culinary Challenge took place at the 2011 Fine Food Fair held at the Centre from September 5-9, with the results announced the following week.
