Tweed: addressed for success PDF  | Print |  Email

Work, Live, Play

TEDC’s programs are rapidly adding local employment and business establishment opportunities, transforming what had predominantly been a ‘commute to the Gold Coast and Brisbane’ employment scenario.

Strategic transport links now connect the Gold Coast and Brisbane with Tweed more efficiently than ever. A key component is the new Tugan Bypass, which opens up access to the Gold Coast Airport for the region and eliminates a major highway bottleneck from the New South Wales-Queensland border.

The Federal Government’s Auslink projects the previous 42,000 daily vehicle capacity of the Tugan highway area can now effectively cater for 152,000 vehicles a day with the bypass, which tunnels under the southern edge of the airport runway. The bypass will be able to take 55 percent of traffic off the existing Gold Coast Highway by 2017 and reduce the travel time between Currumbin and Tweed Heads West to five minutes.

Now in the closing stages of the TEDC’s Economic Vision and Strategy 2007-2010, with results on the board, TEDC chief executive Tom Senti is developing the next phase. This moves forward to a new level in land use planning, initiatives for new industry development, the revival of the region’s central business districts, strategic infrastructure development, growth of regional partnerships and new marketing initiatives for the region.

“That’s TEDC’s role – to offer well researched advice and solutions to see the Tweed region realise its potential as one of the greatest places in the world to work, live and play,” Mr Senti said.

There is plenty of room to move in the Tweed region, where the land, surf, sand and sky’s the limit. ◊
