Ernst & Young entrepreneurs

Some of Queensland’s most innovative business people were acclaimed in Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur Of The Year awards. Property security, coffee, wireless communication and mining are the diverse areas of business behind this year’s Northern Region winners of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year program.

Steve Brabeck of Crimsafe Security Systems, Phillip Di Bella of Di Bella Coffee, Michael Symes of Triasx Pty Ltd and Robin Levison of Industrea were named the region’s top entrepreneurs.

Dressed smart

A range of Queensland’s most innovative women were pinpointed for acclaim in the prestigious Smart Women Smart State Awards 2008, presented by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

Winner were: The Community Development Team at Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council won for their innovative community projects.

The Green Award was won by Amanda O’Malley of Innisfail for her investigation in to a newly described fresh water turtle found in the Johnstone River.

The Research Science Award was won by Kirsten Heimann, of Condon, for her research that can potentially be used to replace current dependence on fossil fuels.

The Engineering Award was won by Melanie Gordon, of Moranbah, for her project management on a dragline shutdown in a central Queensland mine.

In ICT, Teresa Murphy has developed a world class student management system with global export potential in the education sector.

In Community and Public Sector science award, Ala Lew-Tabor, of Greenslopes is researching a cattle tick vaccine to help solve the number one health problem for beef cattle in the state.

The Community and Public Sector Engineering award went to Julie Martin, the first female project manager for the TrackStar Alliance. The Public Sector ICT award went to Yan Li of Toowoomba for her project with CISCO systems.

Smart Awards

Toowoomba-based Easternwell Group, Australia's largest privately owned oil and gas services company, was Queensland’s smartest business in 2008 Premier of Queensland Smart Awards.

Easternwell Group was the overall winner and also took out the award for Large Manufacturing and Mining for its dedication to innovation in servicing, manufacturing and geothermal technologies. Other winners were:

Rising Star Award: North West Queensland Indigenous mining contract service company Northern Project Contracting.

Food and Agribusiness Award: Australian Country Choice.

Science Innovation and Technology Award: Pipe Networks. Services Award: Urban Art Projects (UAP).

Small-to-Medium Manufacturing and Mining Award: Innotech Control Systems Australia and Innotech Guardian Safety Systems.
