One of Queensland’s major economic advantages is its training and career development initiatives, led by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts technical and further education specialist group, TAFE.
With 125 years experience as Queensland’s leading vocational education and training provider, TAFE has worked closely with some of Australia’s leading companies to provide flexible, quality corporate training.
The success of TAFE graduates like Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame Operations Manager Michael Crosbie is evidence of TAFE’s industry relevant training.
Mr Crosbie said his traineeship in Hospitality Operations (Food and Beverage) was the key to establishing a strong, relevant skills base and a professional attitude that has helped him achieve his career goals in the last 10 years.
“TAFE provides training programs that continue to remain relevant to our ever-evolving industry,” Mr Crosbie said.
“It has also given me a fantastic set of skills that I can pass on to other staff and use to run our business in the best practice possible.”
TAFE teachers have a wealth of industry experience. They know the day-to-day issues involved in operating a hospitality, travel and tourism business. These issues include staff turnover, competitive pressure, increasing overheads and changing consumer needs.
TAFE Queensland recently increased its involvement in the hospitality, travel and tourism industry by sponsoring the 2008 Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s ‘Salute to Excellence’ awards.
All Queensland state and non-state secondary schools were invited to nominate up to two Year 12 students for the awards. Winners were selected in four categories; tourism, cookery, food and beverage and school-based apprenticeship. Each winner was awarded with a TAFE scholarship.
Winning students were from Helensvale State High School, Redeemer Lutheran College, Victoria Point State High School and Kirwin State High School.
TAFE Queensland offers flexible training in the workplace, online, in virtual classrooms or in TAFE’s state-of-the-art training facilities. TAFE programs combine theory with practical instruction in professional working environments.
TAFE graduates are then able to apply their new skills immediately in the workplace. ♦
