Landmark year for TAFE PDF  | Print |  Email

TAFE Queensland went from strength to strength in delivering vital education and training programs for business in 2008. Here are some highlights.

Bremer ‘power plays’ with local business

The Bremer Institute of TAFE found innovative ways to strengthen its ties with local business. The VIP night  titled ‘Power Play’ was a major success for developing strategic relationships with local partners such as Education City, Energex, Sound Images and the city’s newspaper The Queensland Times.

The competitive edge with CQ TAFE

Highly skilled and qualified staff were in demand as the skills shortage and record low unemployment rates were being experienced across Central Queensland.

These factors, combined with the need for job-specific training using the latest technologies inspired Central Queensland Institute of TAFE to develop Learn@Work; an innovative training model that delivers on-site, job-specific training that is immediately relevant to the workplace.

The Learn@Work program is now in its fifth year of operation, during which CQ TAFE has partnered with many high profile organisations including Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL), Anglo Coal, Boyne Smelters, the Proserpine Cooperative Sugar Mill and Queensland Magnesia (QMAG) to deliver Learn@Work training.

New Gold Coast marine training centre opens

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said TAFE Marine Gold Coast would expand the industry’s skills base by training 600 apprentices this year, rising to 1000 by 2010.

“This centre gives one of Queensland’s fastest growing industries an excellent venue for training and development,” Mr Welford said at the official opening on March 5, 2008.

Two gold star award for TAFE training

An industry-based training partnership between CSR Sugar and the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE has seen TAFE recognised as one of Australia’s premier providers for Trade Skills Excellence in Engineering.

The Star Rating Scheme is administered by The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence and recognises excellence in trade skills training among TAFE and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). The scheme focuses on eight areas of skills shortage and the level of gold stars indicates an excellent level of trade skills training and teaching delivery.

High performance career for Nathan

Nathan Heck, a graduate of Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE’s Diploma of Motorsport at Warwick Campus is in the thick of the

motorsport industry as a ‘number three engine builder’ with Stone Brothers Racing.

The Motorsports unit at Warwick is the only one of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard of Australia and boasts its own pits, track and regular visits from those leading the racing industry for research and development as well as mentoring.

“Having confidence in the training our employees have received means we can get on with running a successful business,” Stone Brothers Racing Engine Shop manager Les Laidlaw said.

‘Click start’ access to skilled graduates

Queensland TAFE students ‘click started’ their careers by linking up with potential employers via an innovative new model, e2e.NET.

Launched in August 2008, e2e.NET helps graduates move from ‘education to employment’ by matching skilled students and recent graduates with potential employers, in an easy-to-use online network.

Those benefitting from e2e.NET are employers looking for skilled TAFE students and recent graduates to place in full-time, part-time, casual and vacation work positions, or those offering internships, traineeships and apprenticeships.

Opening Gateways

The Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE has helped ensure workers on the Gateway Upgrade Project in Brisbane have relevant up-to-date skills.

The Institute’s Civil Construction team is working with project contractor Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture to tailor training to about 70 trainees on the job.

Civil Construction teacher Bevan Anderson said Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE’s training enabled trainees to continue to meet daily construction deadlines and also improve their skills base and knowledge. ♦
